Show moreTravelled as a young at heart 64 year old, fit and mobile UK couple. Weather was patchy with light rain and a few sunny days. Most days 15 to 23deg. RIU Concordia Hotel, Playa de Palma, Majorca. Half Board. Room 415. Check in online the day before is very painless and we found it aided actual check in. Room was as expected. Not particularly noisy apart from lively Germans returning from the local clubs in the small hours. Early May had the benefit of limited children of school age. Clientele were mostly German with a tiny scattering of other European nations. We were the only Brits in the hotel. The room photos on the TUI website are quite representative. Rooms towels are worn out and horrible. Stayed at many RIU hotels and this seems to be their unfortunate USP. Room TV covers many European channels and a couple of UK ones. Mini fridge which can accommodate standard litre bottles of drinks. Decent sized safety deposit box that can accommodate a MacBook size laptop + passports etc.. Various chambermaids serviced our room and were excellent. We were charged the new “tourist“ tax amounting to 46-odd Euros for a couple for 7 days. No choice but compelled to pay up. Reception staff are multilingual and excellent. Unlike previous TUI experiences whereby we had TUI info put under our hotel room door & followed up by a meet & greet. We had to seek out the TUI rep and plug him for local info. He catered for the majority German clientele and was surprised a UK couple were staying. Inside & Outside buffet restaurant available for both breakfast and dinner. Self service pleasant enough hot and cold buffet food. 27m unheated pool is 1.2m deep. Sparingly used in May. Hotel location is correct as per the brochure, a short walk to the promenade and beach. Hotel is situated in an urban environment with busy roads all around. Hotel grounds were ok for its location, simple layout with nothing spectacular or pretty. Surrounding the hotel are many German orientated eateries and bars. A pseudo large “German” beer hall, “BierKonig” is very lively and a bit lairy. Early in May there were many football shirt clad groups giving it large. The beer bottles, beer tins and rubbish left lying around is not my experience of neat and tidy Germans as I lived in that country for nearly a decade. Unlike the Brits abroad I never saw one fight or any agro. An appropriate level of Spanish police were ever present so felt safe. A large contingent of African street hawkers were everywhere plying their fake goods. They were persistent in trying to sell their wares but not aggressive and moved on if you did not want anything. Hotel entertainment is mainly vocal, piano and guitar style artists doing cover songs. All very acceptable for an hour or so entertainment. Sun beds are cheapish plastic ones that are reasonably comfortable. There are also collapsible brollies but seem quite worn out. You are allocated one pool towel per person with a 10 Euro returnable deposit. They are very worn but they do get some heavy duty usage. For our visit in early May with mixed weather there was little problem for sun beds. Hotel cleanliness is spotless and excellent as is the pool areas. Both East Midlands and Palma airports are awful. East Midlands old fashioned bus transfer on return flight is dreadful. East Midlands outbound seemed better with more modern security equipment and in early May didn’t seem a problem. Inbound to Palma there were quite a few kiosks where you could attempt to complete the new EU Entry/Exit System (EES). As a couple we did all the registration for EES without any problems. Plenty of registration kiosks and staff to help. Queue was less than an hour. Outbound from Palma is as chaotic as normal, to few staff and awkward routing around the various stages of trying to get to the boarding gate. It is terrible and just have to put up with it.
