Show moreAbismal- On arrival, we discovered that reaching our accommodation involved climbing an extremely steep hill while carrying our luggage. We had three 25kg suitcases, three additional bags, a child’s car seat, and our young child. My husband is currently awaiting knee surgery, making this climb particularly difficult and painful. The only alternative route involved climbing more than 50 steps. Had this information been made clear at the time of booking, we would never have chosen this accommodation. I feel this is important information that should be clearly disclosed to customers before they book. When we eventually reached our room after the exhausting climb, we found that the front door was broken. A maintenance worker attended but was unable to repair it properly and advised my husband simply to use the patio doors instead. This is clearly neither an appropriate nor a safe solution. When my husband attempted to use the alternative doors, we discovered they were also faulty. We reported these issues immediately and requested to be moved. We eventually changed rooms at around 11pm after what had already been a very long day of travelling. However, the replacement room presented further problems. The apartment was unbearably hot and unsafe to sleep in. The only air conditioning unit was located in the lounge area, with no cooling in the bedroom. As a result, our family had no choice but to sleep in the lounge throughout our holiday. We reported this to the TUI representative, but nothing was done. Even a maintenance engineer acknowledged that the air conditioning system was not fit for purpose. The air conditioning unit was also leaking continuously onto the balcony, creating a slip hazard. I personally slipped after stepping outside because of the water. We had to place a bucket underneath the unit every day to collect the water and prevent somebody else from being injured. This should never have been necessary. I was also extremely concerned about the condition of the swimming pool. There were black pieces of biofilm floating in the water and it appeared murky. Having worked for many years as an infection control consultant specialising in water safety, I recognise these as potential indicators of poor pool hygiene and maintenance, representing a potential health risk. During our stay, the pool was also closed for two days due to faecal contamination, further reinforcing concerns regarding pool management. This was our first self-catering holiday with TUI and, on the occasions we purchased drinks from the hotel, we noticed there appeared to be no consistent pricing. We were charged different amounts for the same drinks on different occasions without any explanation. This created the impression that prices were arbitrary rather than fixed and transparent. The advertised sofa bed was also misleading. It was simply an ordinary sofa rather than a proper sofa bed and was extremely uncomfortable. This fell well below the standard we expected. Perhaps most concerning of all was an incident involving the apartment’s fire alarm. Reception telephoned us to ask whether we were smoking in the room. Neither my husband nor I smoke, and we were not cooking at the time. Reception explained that a third-party monitoring company had informed them that our fire alarm had activated, and they had then contacted us. I was alarmed to discover that the apartment’s alarm itself was not sounding, meaning guests could potentially remain unaware of a fire risk while information passes through several stages before reaching them. I requested that someone attend immediately to inspect the alarm. A member of staff came to the apartment, simply looked at the ceiling and stated that everything was fine without carrying out any inspection or testing whatsoever. From a safety perspective, I find this completely unacceptable. Fire safety should never be treated so casually.
