Forgot to add at last section. The transfer bus driver ( same driver arrival and departure) drove like a maniac. We were hanging on for dear life . He was so bad so fast we were terrified. It’s an accident waiting to happen In 50 years of holidays this has got to be the worst hotel we’ve experienced. Firstly the staff are all lovely so no complaints there, however we booked a superior room with full sea view and were put in a dark hole on ground floor that you could only just see the sea if you stood up. You couldn’t open the curtain as people could see in. It was a grubby room in need of updating which surprised us as the site said the rooms were newly refurbished ( I took picture of the wording because the reception argued with me that it didn’t say that) anyway they moved us to 1st floor. Sea view wonderful but still fail to see what was superior about it. Every morning around 7:07am we are wakened by a loud clunking which lasts around 10 mins. We didn’t say anything because we didn’t want them to think we were just complaining. We then got landed with very noisy neighbours which we didn’t complain about until we reached the 3rd night with no sleep. We did receive an apology and were happy they had dealt with it, however that day at pool we had constant banging by the workmen on the gate/fence. We’d had enough so escaped to our room where they were banging in a room above us We didn’t complain (again),as understand occasionally maintenance has to be done however next day at pool they had grinding tools and the banging continued. We went to speak to them to be told it would be all day. Also on their barbecue evenings our balcony was unusable due to being smoked out and the smell, so that was twice . Now I have to add during our time here we both celebrated birthdays and both time received a bottle of fizz from hotel so in that respect can’t fault them, and for the banging we got a basket of fruit and bottle of red wine, but it hasn’t been the most relaxing of holidays the stress of the horrible room, the little things you try to not complain about, and I don’t really want free stuff I just want what I paid for in beginning. I would not recommend this hotel. Rooms are very old and in need of refurbishment, slight old/ damp smell. Towels a bit threadbare and hard, Bathroom very dated, mould etc carpets have stains. It’s not the luxury superior room recently renovated I expected and we were extremely disappointed

Rooms clean & whilst a single traveller, I'd have preferred a double to two twin beds. Adequate hangers, but no light in the wardrobe meant dark seeing clothes and the the safe was too low and hard to see without using my phone light. Nice to have a balcony to sit on and see the sea view.

“Excellent séjour au PortoBay”

Nous avons eu un excellent séjour à l'hôtel Portobay Santa Maria. Situation idéale à Funchal. Magnifique vue sur l'océan. Hotel confortable avec un service très aimable. Nous parlons anglais donc la langue n'est pas un problème mais nous avons été étonnés de converser en français dans les restaurants et les commerces mais pas à la réception de l'hôtel. Il faut savoir que la piscine a une profondeur de maximum 1m10, c'est un peu juste pour nager. Les installations intérieures étaient très bien également. En résumé, un excellent séjour à tous points de vue.
